WHITMAN -- August 13, 2025, Whitman DPW Water Commissioners approved a sewer manhole repair contract at roughly half its estimated cost. The board signed a contract with National Water Main Cleaning Co. to rehabilitate five sewer manholes for approximately $37,000, against an original estimate of $70,000, with work expected to begin the week of August 25. The superintendent said the repairs should reduce inflow to the regional treatment facility by an estimated 5 million gallons per year, lowering Whitman's billable overflow percentage. Commissioners unanimously abated a $153.27 library water bill issued in error from fiscal year 2024 and approved a contractual step raise for DPW mechanic Ryan Harrington to pay grade W19E. A request from MassDOT to waive $112 in late interest and demand fees on two Bedford Street accounts was tabled after a divided debate, with one commissioner arguing "we are operating a utility" and warning against setting a pattern of waiving fees for missed payments.
