Town Administrator Mary Beth Carter told the committee that a Board of Selectmen-backed library-specific override, placed on the May 16 ballot by a 3-2 Board of Selectmen vote, would cost the average homeowner about $93 per year on a home valued at $516,000, while using free cash instead would balloon the fiscal 2028 deficit from roughly $659,000 to $1.2 million. Library Director Rebecca Langer warned that a full library closure, not mere decertification, would expel Whitman from the Old Colony Library Network and that 12 neighboring towns, including Abington, Hingham, Braintree, and Marshfield, have already confirmed they will not lend to Whitman residents. Whitman-Hanson Regional School District officials reported 64 staff positions eliminated over the past 12 months at a cost of just under $2 million, and cautioned that defunding the non-mandated transportation line of roughly $230,000 could legally invalidate the entire regional school district budget. Finance Committee Chair Mike Stanton said he intends to present a balanced budget without an override at the April 8 joint session with the Board of Selectmen, spreading cuts across departments rather than zeroing out the library.
