ZBA grants garage variance, bars dwelling use
Zoning Board · Meeting of September 21, 2026
Whitman Zoning Board approves garage variance, continues 12-unit duplex review to October 5. The board voted 5-0 to grant Christopher Maynard a variance for a 22-by-24-foot garage at 441 Washington Street, conditioned that the second floor never be "used as a dwelling unit." Engineer Eddie Jacobs presented a redesigned Rye Hill Street duplex project, cut from seven buildings to six, with 37 parking spaces against a required 32 and a widened 24-foot internal road; the board pushed for an 18-foot fire-truck turnaround and a possible 48-foot rear setback before continuing the hearing. Member Kimball said the plan is "a little tight for the lot, but it meets the requirements." The board also heard that Whitman's bylaw has no provision for siting battery-storage or solar facilities under a new state fast-track permitting program a presenter called "hell-bent" on expansion.
