Select Board votes 3-2 to advance school pact changes
Select Board · Meeting of September 8, 2026
Whitman Select Board splits 3-2 on Whitman-Hanson school funding pact rewrite. Clerk Shawn Kain and Regional School Committee Chair Ryan Tressel presented a redrafted Regional Agreement, the first substantive rewrite since 1992, adding a two-thirds vote requirement for major School Committee actions and shifting capital costs to an assessment model. Members Dawn Byers and Christina Gorman voted no, with Byers arguing that "departing from the statutory framework... crosses the line from compromise into poor stewardship of taxpayer money." The board voted 5-0 to let Chair Justin Evans sign a letter asking the state Inspector General to audit the regional school district.
Separately, the board tabled for two weeks a decision on joining a 12-town, $250,000-grant-funded household hazardous waste depot in Hanover that would add about $2,400 a year to Whitman's costs. The board also passed over Town Clerk Dawn Varley's resignation as Records Access Officer, adding Town Administrator Sabrina Chilcott and Assistant Town Administrator Matthew Dyer to the role instead.
