WHITMAN — The Whitman Zoning Board of Appeals voted 5-0 to approve a three-tenant restaurant plaza, including a Starbucks drive-through, on a Bedford Street parcel split from the Northeastern Savings Bank lot. Engineer Samuel Franti of Soli Engineering, representing applicant DDM Whitman LLC, defended a plan for 64 parking spaces against a town formula requiring 124, citing seat-based counts and a projected peak demand of "51 to 53" vehicles. Board member Kimball called it "a good package" but warned "I personally know that there's accidents that have happened there because of people coming and going" at the adjacent Route 18/14 intersection.
The board attached a one-year parking review condition and required 10 employee spaces and added handicapped access front and rear. The board also voted 5-0 to approve a redesigned six-unit duplex project at 25 Rye Hill Street for Senegal Realty Trust, down from seven units, with a 48-foot setback variance for four buildings.
