Whitman ZBA Continues Temple Street Duplex, Approves Franklin Street Estate Lot

WHITMAN — October 6, 2025 — Whitman Zoning Board of Appeals continues disputed Temple Street duplex and approves Franklin Street retreat lot. The board, meeting October 6 with new associate member Tim Travers — a former Whitman fire chief — voted 5-0 to continue Case No. 14 for a proposed duplex at 306 Temple Street after members signaled they would accept only a single-family home on the 17,500-square-foot highway-business-zone parcel. Vice Chair Richard Blosz said the duplex "does not conform to the neighborhood," and member Robert Curran questioned the legality of the underlying subdivision. The board sent applicant Dan Dew's attorney, Ronald Whitney, back to draft a revised single-family plan with elevation drawings for the October 27 hearing. In Case No. 15, the board voted 5-0 to approve frontage and use variances for a 3.95-acre rear-access estate lot at 521 Franklin Street, sought by Stephen Egan on behalf of owner Roger Harris, subject to DPW approval of water and sewer service, fire department sign-off on the roughly 625-foot driveway, and a drainage condition protecting abutter Jeffrey Bailey at 545 Franklin Street.
