Whitman Zoning Board Votes 5-0 to Convert Vacant Commercial Space Into Eight Apartments

WHITMAN — June 23, 2025 — Whitman Zoning Board unanimously approves eight new apartments at long-vacant Marble Street commercial space. The board voted 5-0 at its June 23 meeting to amend a 2008 decision and allow 7 Marble Street LLC to convert 8,927 square feet of ground-floor commercial space in the east building of the 127-unit mixed-use complex into four one-bedroom and four two-bedroom apartments. Attorney Edward Fleming told the board the rear-facing commercial space "really don't have the level of visibility" needed to attract tenants, with some units sitting empty for ten to fifteen years. Town fire, building, and health officials all submitted letters of no objection. The board also noted, without taking action, that the property owner faces an unresolved town land lease with assessed value cited at $431,500 and several years of unpaid lease fees, referring that dispute to the Select Board.
