Assessors to seek state fix for garage error
Other Committee · Meeting of September 29, 2026
Whitman assessors agree to pursue a state-approved fix for a years-old garage assessment error. Resident Therese Kohler told the Board of Assessors a 2018 abatement she won was never entered into the system, leaving her garage counted as living space for years afterward; a re-measurement by assessing staffer Jacqueline found a $23,700 valuation difference. Kohler asked the board to seek retroactive relief covering roughly three years, which requires state Department of Revenue approval.
"They're charging me for a garage," Kohler said, noting her overall valuation is still projected to rise from about $794,000 to $813,000 due to townwide land-value increases. The board also approved routine business: $4,650 to vendor Catalyst, $21.16 to W.B. Mason, excise abatements of $560.54 and $145.78, a $2,667.33 motor vehicle abatement, and $727.85 in additional vehicle abatements, before entering executive session at 6:43 p.m.
