Whitman panel prioritizes dog park survey over skate park

Other Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026

Whitman open space panel fast-tracks a dog park survey, puts the skate park on hold. The Open Space and Recreation Plan Implementation Committee, chaired by Jason DeRozier, set an Oct. 5 to Oct. 30 window for a Memorial Field dog park survey, settling on a roughly three-dog cap and a minimum age of 14 to bring a dog in unaccompanied. Vice Chair Ed said minors handling dogs are "responsible for a pretty big weapon," pushing the committee toward the age floor.

The companion skate park survey will wait until members know how much space the dog park needs, with the two sites only about 150 feet apart. Member Robert Trumbull agreed to compile a priority list of the town's roughly 33 identified culverts by the Oct. 22 meeting, tied to the town's pending MS4 stormwater permit. A 12.5-acre parcel near Jacob's Lane heads to the Select Board Oct. 6 as a possible open-space buy.
