Whitman Recreation Pool Fund Nearly Wiped Out
Other Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026
Whitman Recreation Commission says pool budget line stayed at zero for a second year running. Recreation Director Kathleen told the commission the pool brought in about $96,000 between pool passes, swim lessons and the park program but paid out $90,000 in payroll plus thousands more in chemicals, opening and closing costs, leaving the program reliant on a revolving account that held roughly $23,000 as of June, before summer expenses. She raised the shortfall and the department's electrical costs with the Select Board at a September 15 chairs' meeting.
One member called the fund "not a viable resource," saying it's "an emergency resource." The commission also set an October 27 Town Hall trick-or-treat event and heard the Community Preservation Committee may fund repairs to the pool's long-broken accessibility lift. The commission approved its June 11 minutes and set its next meeting for October 15.
