Whitman Conservation Commission Approves Stetson Terrace Sewer and Pump Station Replacement

WHITMAN — March 17, 2026 — Whitman Conservation Commission unanimously approved a sewer and pump station replacement at Stetson Terrace, a 40-unit complex where the aging system has repeatedly burned out pumps from groundwater infiltration. The project, filed under DEP number 340-0495, calls for a new watertight pump chamber to be sited just outside the 100-foot wetland buffer, along with replacement of sewer mains, bituminous walkways, and installation of an emergency generator and propane tank; total construction is estimated at 120 to 150 days. The commission required the project engineer to add a dewatering plan to the drawings before construction begins and mandated that erosion controls be inspected prior to any ground disturbance. Members also reported that a draft conservation bylaw is believed to have been unanimously accepted by the town's Bylaws Study Committee on March 11, with two public hearings now being scheduled for April — one at Town Hall on April 7 and a second tentatively at the Whitman Police Department community room on April 25 — ahead of the spring town warrant deadline. A 50-percent reimbursement grant application for inspection of the Hobart Pond dams, last examined in 2017, was described as due Thursday, March 19, through a firm called Verdantis.
