Whitman OKs Unpermitted Auto Shop Storage Building
Conservation · Meeting of September 15, 2026
Whitman Conservation Commission retroactively approves an auto shop's unpermitted storage building and moves toward fining illegal wetlands discharges. The board voted unanimously to approve an order of conditions for Columbia Auto Realty Trust LLC's Temple Street storage building, built without prior review, after engineer Kyle Garvey proposed signage instead of fencing along the wetland buffer and shop operator Eduardo defended the spray booth's filtration, saying "all the system that we have required by Massachusetts state law, we have there." Neighbors, including Stephen Dobson, raised drainage and paint-odor concerns. Separately, the board approved an amended order for 154 Auburn Street after a contractor illegally ran downspout pipes into a stream, requiring capped piping and no fertilizer near the water.
The commission also advanced draft bylaw language requiring conservation review of pools near wetlands, with a proposed $500 local fine for illegal discharges, ahead of public hearings October 6, 13 and 17.
