Whitman Recreation Commission Sets June 25 Deadline to Save Summer Swim Sessions

WHITMAN — June 11, 2026 — Whitman Recreation Commission votes to cancel two swim lesson sessions unless enrollment hits 13. The commission, meeting June 11, set a deadline of June 25 for Sessions 2 and 3 of its summer swim program to each reach 13 registered participants — the break-even point calculated from instructor costs of roughly $1,530 per session against a $120 per-child fee — or face cancellation. Session 2 had seven signups and Session 3 had five as of the meeting. Recreation Director Kathleen Evans, re-elected secretary at the same meeting, reported the department received no appropriated expense line at Town Meeting, leaving the revolving fund — carrying roughly $23,000 in available operating funds — as the sole source for electricity, pool chemicals, opening and closing costs, and a pending $10,000 to $12,000 ADA lift replacement. The commission also scaled the Fourth of July celebration to a free two-hour event from 10 a.m. to noon, ending the prior practice of free public pool access on the holiday.
