Whitman Zoning Board Approves Bedford Street Car Wash 5-0, Denies Duplex Bedroom Expansion

WHITMAN — November 17, 2025 — Whitman's Zoning Board of Appeals approved a new automated car wash at 342 Bedford Street and denied a bedroom-expansion request at a South Shore duplex, both by 5-0 votes at its November 17 meeting. Chair John Goldrosen and Vice Chair Richard Blosz led the five-member panel in approving a special permit and site plan for the Aang Ten car wash, to be built on the southern portion of the Northeastern Savings Bank property at Route 18 and Auburn Street, with conditions that include an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. operating window, a cap of four signs on the building plus one monument sign at each of the two driveway entrances, construction hours limited to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and a requirement that the existing six-foot fence along Auburn Street be maintained. Engineer Paige Weidner of CESO told the board the updated site plan reduces pavement and brings green space to 42 percent of the combined property. The board separately denied a request by the owner of 159 Auburn Street to amend a 2024 duplex special permit to allow a third bedroom per unit, with Blosz citing the bylaw's 2.6-space-per-unit parking requirement for multifamily dwellings — a standard the four-space lot cannot meet for six bedrooms.
